Barcelona midfield mainstay will not require surgery after fresh injury setback vs Athletic Club

Last night was one to forget for FC Barcelona. Not only were they held to a goalless draw by Athletic Club, but the Blaugrana lost two of their most important players – Pedri and Frenkie de Jong, to fresh injuries.

De Jong was taken off with an ankle issue while Pedri suffered yet another injury to his right thigh – his third of the season.

Naturally, there are a lot of concerns surrounding the situation, especially with Pedri, given his recurring injury problems.

No surgery needed

But there appears to be a silver lining with regard to the Spanish international as he will not require surgery following his latest injury, reports RAC1 (via SPORT).

It is the third thigh injury that Pedri has sustained this season, with him already missing 15 matches in the past. And now, he appears to be sidelined for a considerable amount of time again.

The images of Pedri on the bench crying inconsolably after being subbed off were heartbreaking. The Canary Islander knew he was threatened with surgery if he had a major injury to the same area again.

In fact, as per the report, since returning to action in January for the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, the ex-Las Palmas man had been using his left foot much more to strike the ball than he usually does. He was aware of the risk of surgery.

The exact extent of the midfielder’s injury will be known today once he has undergone medical tests, but according to information from RAC1, Pedri will avoid the operation theatre.

It will not be necessary for Pedri to undergo surgery as other teammates have had in recent years to repair a muscle injury, like Ousmane Dembélé, Sergi Roberto, and more recently Alejandro Balde.

Going under the knife would mean saying goodbye to the season. Avoiding it could mean that Xavi could still count on the Canary Islander before the end of the season.
