“He’s a total one-off” – Howe pays tribute to Newcastle’s unsung hero from Wolves win

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has referred to Fabian Schar as a “total one-off” following his performance in our 3-0 win over Wolves on Saturday.

The Swiss international made the second most passes (54) and won more aerial duels than any other player, made a brilliant early tackle on Pedro Neto and played key passes into midfield in the build up to all three of our goals.

Many voted Bruno Guimaraes man of the match, while Isak Gordon and Livramento made the headlines for their goals, but Schar was one of the unsung heroes in a huge win for Howe.

On Schar, the boss said: “There won’t be many centre-halves like Fabby (Schar). He is a total one-off, he is a very good defender when he is absolutely concentrated and really well-trained.

“He is as good a defender as I’ve seen. But he would probably tell you that his biggest strengths are on the ball, and he can see things and execute things that I don’t see many other centre-halves capable of doing. That’s why he’s so important to us.

“The pass for the last goal, I don’t think anyone else in the stadium saw, apart from maybe Tino, because he’s made the run. He maybe knows that Fabby is capable of playing him in, they were moments of absolute class.”

Schar, who joined Newcastle in 2018 for £3million; has proved to be one of the best players who survived from the fallout of Rafa Benitez and Steve Bruce leaving and has become a pivotal player in Howe’s squad.
