Newcastle to join FFP rebellion? – A summer theory as rivals hit out after PL punishment

It was announced on Monday that Nottingham Forest have been docked four points by the Premier League after breaching Financial Fair Play / Profit and Sustainability rules.

Forest appointed top sports lawyer Nick De Marco – the man who pushed through the Saudi takeover of Newcastle – and released a hard-hitting statement in response, which featured this powerful line – “This is the only model by which clubs outside of the small group at the very top end of the Premier League can realistically advance up the football pyramid.”

They hit the nail on the head. The Premier League have created a closed shop that only serves to benefit the ‘big six’ and limit the potential of those outside who wish to invest and catch up with those at the top table. It’s been suggested that Newcastle will NEED to sell a star player this summer to invest. In what world does that make sense when we now have wealthy owners who’ve come in to compete with the very best, especially when many of our ‘big six’ rivals have gained a huge advantage by spending big and securing mega-money commercial deals while these strict financial restrictions were not in place.

So, what do Newcastle United do? One theory was put forward yesterday by The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, who said this on Twitter – “I wonder if #NUFC look at four point penalty and six point penalty handed out to Nottingham Forest and Everton and think, you know what, let’s just spend big in one window, improve the squad depth dramatically even if it means we breach PSR threshold and see where that gets us? Would that be a more sensible strategy long term than having to sell to buy in the summer?”

It’s a fair point. A four-point deduction for Nottingham Forest isn’t earth-shattering, although there would be concerns that the Premier League would come down harder on Newcastle if they believed we have purposefully ignored regulations to gain an advantage.
