Joshua Kimmich has been a target for FC Barcelona since last summer when Sergio Busquets left the club.
The Bayern Munich superstar was seen as a direct replacement but the club’s financial situation and the Bundesliga champions’ reluctance to sell meant a move was never a realistic possibility.
Heading into the summer of 2024, though, the situation has changed as Kimmich is unhappy at Bayern and with his contract set to expire next year, the Bavarian giants are open to a sale if a renewal agreement is not reached.
Barcelona interested, but move possible only in 2025
SPORT reports that Barcelona are well aware of the situation surrounding Kimmich at this point at Bayern Munich.
The Bundesliga champions will seek a fee higher than €60 million for the 29-year-old, whose current market value stands at €75 million.
As such, Barcelona see the signing of Kimmich this summer as impossible unless there is a huge sale, the possibility of which is not very high.
The Catalans are in no position to sign the German midfielder by paying a big fee. And therefore, they have informed Kimmich that the only way they could sign him would be for free in 2025 when his contract expires.

A tricky proposition
As per the report, the project that Barça are ‘selling’ Kimmich for 2025 is ambitious, with the full inauguration of Spotify Camp Nou and with the hope that finances will improve with which they will be able to bring in top players.
Asking Kimmich to not renew his contract and continue at Bayern until next year, though, would be a tricky move.
Everything will now depend on the final offers the midfielder gets this summer and whether he is capable of resisting the pressure of Bayern who do not want to let him leave for free in 2025.
Clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City are all interested, and could table interesting proposals.
