Steve Nickson talks to sign out-of-contract defender could hit stumbling block – Report

According to Craig Hope at The Mail, Newcastle’s pursuit of Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly could be about to get complicated.

He reports that head of recruitment Steve Nickson has been leading talks over a summer move for the out-of-contract 25-year-old. However, there is some work to do in negotiations and fears agent fees could prove a stumbling block.

Kelly has so far rejected the chance to sign a new deal at the Vitality and looks set to leave for ‘nothing’ this summer. That adds to the appeal for Newcastle, who could benefit from his versatility, Premier League experience and free-transfer status, but it seems we won’t be messed around when it comes to the demands of intermediaries.

Discussions between Kelly’s representatives and Newcastle are ‘ongoing’, with Eddie Howe keen to bring the 6ft 3′ defender to Tyneside. He brought him to Bournemouth in 2019 and will value the former Bristol City star’s ability to play at centre-back or left-back, much like Dan Burn.

In that same piece for The Mail, Hope reveals that we’ve suffered another knee injury behind the scenes, with goalkeeper coach Shwan Jalal suffering a ‘serious’ injury during our recent warm weather camp in Dubai.
