Inter Miami’s hopes of lifting a first CONCACAF trophy in club history will have to wait.
The Herons suffered elimination from the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Wednesday after falling 3-1 to Monterrey in quarterfinal second leg action. Monterrey advanced 5-2 on aggregate, using goals from Brandon Vazquez, German Berterame and Jesus Gallardo to seal a semifinal spot.
Vazquez, the former FC Cincinnati forward, propelled Monterrey in front after 31 minutes. After picking off an errant pass from Herons goalkeeper Drake Callender, Vazquez slotted home into an empty net.
The hosts continued to keep their foot on the gas in the second half with Berterame getting in on the action. Berterame’s long-range missile landed into the top-right corner just before the hour mark for a 2-0 Monterrey lead.
Gallardo added his name to the scoresheet in the 64th minute, powering home a header into the bottom-right corner. Berterame’s cross was finished off by the Mexican international to truly end Inter Miami’s comeback homes.
Jordi Alba’s second-half ejection truly summed up Inter Miami’s evening as the veteran left back received a second yellow card.
Diego Gomez pulled a late consolation goal back before the final whistle, but it was Monterrey who celebrated its spot in the final four.
Inter Miami’s league schedule resumes on Saturday with a non-conference trip to Sporting KC.
