NY City Council approves NYCFC’s stadium plan

New York City FC’s proposed stadium plan has taken another major step forward.

The NY City Council approved NYCFC’s proposed stadium plan ahead of a potential 2027 debut, the club announced. $780 million is expected to fund the construction of the stadium, which will anchor a 23-acre redevelopment project in the Willets Point neighborhood.

NYCFC’s stadium will also be built across from Citi Field, the home of MLB’s New York Mets. The redevelopment project will also include housing, a new public school, retail stores and a hotel.

It will mark NYCFC’s first soccer-specific home stadium since the club’s inaugural campaign in 2015. Citi Field, Yankee Stadium, and New York Red Bulls’ Red Bull Arena have all hosted home matches for NYCFC.

Manchester City’s owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan is among the NYCFC ownership group.

NYCFC currently sits 13th in the 15-team Eastern Conference through six matches played. Up next for Nick Cushing’s squad is a home date with the New England Revolution on Saturday.
