Time waits for no man of course, and those players who were in their twenties and thirties during the tournament are now in their seventies and eighties.

Beckenbauer himself passed away in January of this year, with another of the World Cup winning squad, Bernd Hoelzenbein, succumbing to dementia on Monday according to The Sun.

Hoelzenbein won the penalty in the final that was converted by Paul Breitner, and allowed West Germany – as they were then – to gain a foothold in the final.

Gerd ‘Der Bomber’ Muller would go on to score the winner, Johan Neeskens having opened the scoring for Holland from the spot.
