Newcastle have been dealt a major blow with midfielder Joe Willock ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Mail Sport have reported a decision has been taken to give Willock’s troublesome achilles a period of rest.
The 24-year-old has been plagued with the problem since the start of the campaign and although he returned in February the pain hasn’t fully gone, and he will sit of the Magpies’ final six games.
Willock to miss rest of the season
The midfielder joined Newcastle from Arsenal in 2021 and signed a six-year contract at St James’ Park.
Mail Sport add that after the former Arsenal star visited a specialist it was confirmed he could continue to play, but the plan is to combine a period of rest with some strength work to make sure everything is ok for pre season.
Willock has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with an achilles problem.
Manager Eddie Howe will want Willock completely free of the problem, and with his performances not as his usual standards, it’s felt the best decision was to end his season early.
The injury has limited Willock to just nine starts and five substitute appearances this campaign and he has scored two goals.
He has been a big miss in the Newcastle midfield this season with Howe reportedly valuing his energy and ball carrying ability.
