Barcelona loanee’s transfer not in danger despite being ruled out for nine months after injury

This past weekend, PSV Eindhoven announced that on-loan Barcelona defender Sergino Dest had suffered a serious knee injury that would sideline him for an extended period.

Dest joined PSV on a season-long loan from Barça last summer with the Dutch club retaining an option to sign him permanently for €10 million.

Things had been going very well for the right-back in the Netherlands and all signs pointed towards a permanent transfer until the unfortunate injury struck.

Dest out for nine months

Following the serious knee injury suffered by Dest, SPORT has now come up with an update on a possible return date for the USMNT international.

As per the report, the Barcelona loanee could be for as long as nine months following the serious injury he suffered this month.

It means that the defender will not only miss the remainder of the season but also sit out of the Copa America in the summer as well as not feature for the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

PSV still want to sign him

Following the long-term injury for Dest, it was believed that PSV might pass up on the opportunity to make his transfer permanent.

However, the Dutch club’s director, Marcel Brands, has confirmed that they do intend to keep hold of the Barcelona loanee despite his lengthy stint on the sidelines.

“The move to sign him is going in the right direction,” said Brands.

“[Dest’s injury] Didn’t look good, we’re afraid. We have to wait and see what happens, but we believe in Sergiño and I assume he will get back to fitness. We would very much like him to stay at PSV,” he added.

Brands added that Dest took some convincing to stay in Eredivisie but the club seem to have achieved that, saying:

“We had to convince him, but he is getting more and more enthusiastic and enjoying himself. That’s why he wanted to talk to PSV about staying longer.”
