Josh Sargent scores as Norwich City draws closer to promotion playoff spot

Norwich City did not clinch a spot just yet into the EFL Championship promotion playoffs but moved one step closer to doing so on Saturday.

The Canaries tied Swansea City 2-2 at Carrow Road, moving into fifth place heading into May 4’s final day of the regular season. Josh Sargent scored his 16th league goal of the season for David Wagner’s men as the Canaries sit in the drivers seat to clinching a top-six finish.

Hull City’s 3-3 draw with Ipswich Town on Saturday night paused celebrations for Norwich City.

Norwich City had to fight back on home soil to earn a share of the spoils after Jamie Paterson opened the scoring for Swansea City in the 24th minute. Gabriel Sara equalizer for the Canaries in the 34th minute before Sargent’s headed finish in first-half stoppage time made it 2-1 Norwich City.

It marked Sargent’s 13th goal of 2024.

However, Matt Grimes’ penalty-kick equalizer in the second half though helped the Swans fight back for a 2-2 draw.

Sargent totaled three shots on target out of his eight in total, while also winning four duels and drawing two fouls. He has remained a consistent final-third threat for the Canaries this spring.

Norwich City will guarantee a top-six finish if they win or tie against Birmingham City on May 4. A road defeat though, paired with a Hull City victory over Plymouth Argyle could boot the Canaries out of the top-six altogether.
