Barcelona veteran confirms the reason behind his slow start to the campaigns

With just five games to go in La Liga, Robert Lewandowski has well and truly made a comeback into the race for the Pichichi award.

Having won the award last season, the Polish star began the 2023-24 campaign in poor form, struggling in the final third and invisible for large durations on the field.

Despite his poor start, however, he rediscovered his best form in 2024 and has enjoyed a great run over the past three months. He now has 16 goals to his name in La Liga, just three behind the leader Artem Dobvyk.

Lewy reveals fitness setback

Speaking to BILD via SPORT in a recent interview, the veteran striker revealed that he was not at his 100% physically at the beginning of the season and how he currently feels from a fitness standpoint.

“I had physical problems in the first half of the season, from the beginning of the preparation.”

“Things improved in 2024. I played good games, sometimes in a different role, like a false nine: I was able to give assists and help shape the game,” he added.

Lewandowski’s ability to come up clutch for the team despite a sub-par star only goes on to prove why the talisman is considered one of the best ever to grace the game. After all, he has eleven goals and five assists in his last 17 appearances for Barcelona.

A hat-trick to remember

Barcelona did not enjoy their best night facing off against Valencia last night, and a comedy of errors had them down 2-1 at half-time.

When the team needed him most, Lewandowski stepped up to the occasion and single-handedly turned the game around for Xavi’s side.

An early equaliser in the second half followed by two late goals helped him complete his hat-trick and Barcelona to a famous 4-2 win.
