May 3 – LigaMX’s CF Pachuca will face Columbus Crew from the MLS in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup Final on June 1, at Estadio Hidalgo in Pachuca.
CF Pachuca secured a spot in the final on Tuesday night after defeating Club America 2-1 (3-2 on aggregate). In the quarter finals they beat CS Herediano of Costa Rica (7-1 on aggregate) and the Philadelphia Union (USA) in the Round of 16 (6-0 on aggregate).
Columbus Crew qualified for the final with 3-1 victory over LigaMX’s CF Monterrey, (5-2 on aggregate) on Wednesday night at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Mexico.
The MLS club eliminated Tigres UANL, 4-3 on penalties (2-2 on aggregate) in the quarterfinals, having beaten Houston Dynamo 2-1 on aggregate in the Round of 16.
This will be Pachuca’s sixth final, having won all the previous five appearances, theit last title being in 2016-17.
It is Columbus Crew’s first Champions Cup Final in only their fifth tournament appearance.
Mexican clubs have traditionally dominated the Concacaf Champions Cup that for the current 59th edition was expanded to 27 clubs and played across five rounds. However, US clubs have become increasingly competitive in the competition that qualifies the winners to the expanded Club World Cup.
Club Leon are the current champions having beaten LAFC 3-1 on aggregate in 2023. Seattle Sounders won the title in 2022, and CF Monterrey in 2021.
These three winners will be joined by either Pachuca or Columbus Crew as Concacaf’s four qualifers to the 32-team Club World Cup to be played next year in the US.
The 2024 final will be played as a single-leg final with Pachuca winning the hosting by virtue of topping Concacaf’s competition ranking with the most points.
