Sandro Tonali bets go public as Italian takes action to repay Newcastle United

Following the news that Sandro Tonali has escaped an extended ban after breaching FA betting rules, it has now come to light what he was actually placing bets on.

Luckily for the Italian midfielder, he was backing his own team to win on multiple occasions, so the punishment for this is nowhere near as bad as it could have been had he been backing us to lose.

See the FA’s findings below, which confirms he placed ’40 to 50 football bets’ between August 12th 2023 and October 2023.

Newcastle lost 3-1 to Brighton in September, beat Burnley, Man City and Brentford and drew 2-2 at West Ham thanks to a late equaliser from Mohammed Kudus.

Tonali’s full co-operation with the investigation has clearly helped his cause and it’s also emerged that he’s taken a “substantial” voluntary wage cut; a commendable move on his part given we paid big money to sign the Italian last summer.

The two-month suspended ban will not apply to him so long as the 23-year-old does not repeat the offence and he should hopefully be back available for selection for the third game of next season.
