Weston McKennie has one year remaining on his Juventus contract and the American midfielder is hoping a longer deal can be struck.
McKennie has enjoyed a stellar return to Turin after his loan spell at Leeds United last season. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder has recorded 10 assists in 36 combined appearances this campaign, logging over 2,800 minutes in Massimiliano Allegri’s squad.
Despite being linked with a potential move away last summer, McKennie has played a vital role in the Old Lady’s advancement to the Coppa Italia Final and a current top-four spot in Serie A.
McKennie’s long-term future remains unknown, but the 25-year-old is hopeful to play a part in Juventus’ fight in winning titles and competing in Europe again.
“I have a year left in my contract, and my agent is speaking with the director,” McKennie told DAZN following Juventus’ 1-1 Serie A draw with Roma on Sunday. “I’d like to stay, obviously, but we’ll see what happens. Hopefully, we can work it out. As for the team, we have the same goal we’ve had for the past three years.
“We want to win the Scudetto and play a big role in the Champions League; we want to return Juventus to the glory days, how it was before,” McKennie added. “Juventus are a team with a lot of winning history, and this team wants to show that we belong in that history as well, so hopefully, we can win the Coppa Italia, at least a trophy this season and finish the season strong and for the future put Juventus where we belong.”
Juventus has three league matches remaining against Salernitana, Bologna, and Monza respectively, with the Coppa Italia Final against Atalanta coming on May 15. A strong end of the season could see McKennie ink a new contract ahead of USMNT involvement this summer at the 2024 Copa America tournament.
