Newcastle United are showing interest in Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl, according to Alan Nixon at The Sun.
He reports that Everton are currently ‘leading the race’ for the 21-year-old, but it’s believed Newcastle and Crystal Palace are also tracking the Germany U21 international ahead of the summer transfer window.
Rohl is enjoying a breakthrough season in the Bundesliga and has shown his versatility throughout, playing as a holding midfielder, second striker and down both flanks over the 2023/24 campaign.
The 6ft 3′ talent has two goals and four assists in 24 league games and was a regular in Freiburg’s run to the last 16 of the Europa League, where they were eventually knocked out by West Ham.
Nixon reports that he could be available for just £12m this summer, with Everton considering him a potential replacement for Amadou Onana; another midfielder Newcastle have been linked with in recent months.
