Nunez throws his Liverpool social media pictures out the pram after fan criticism

May 8 – Striker Darwin Nunez has responded to his online critics by deleting all Instagram evidence of his Liverpool career, thrusting his future into doubt as the transfer window looms.

The Uruguayan deleted every picture relating to his time at the club, leaving only photos taken from his time with the national team and former side Benfica.

He added to the speculation around his future with a cryptic photo alongside fellow Uruguay star Ronald Araujo, who has joined Barcelona. Barca are reportedly interested in Nunez, potentially as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

Nunez’s reaction was prompted by criticism he received from Liverpool fans on social media, despite his initial support from fans that saw him become something of a cult hero.

Liverpool signed Nunez from Benfica in the summer of 2022 for €85 million.

This season, he has the lowest shot conversion rate of any of Liverpool’s attackers, scoring just 11 goals from 106 shots in the Premier League. He also has the lowest big-chance conversion rate among players in Europe’s top five leagues, with a total of only 19.4 per cent this season.

Even so, he has still tallied 18 goals and 13 assists across all competitions and was an important player during Mohamed Salah’s absence over the winter, but has since fallen out of favour.

Currently valued at €70 million by Transfermarkt, the club could look to offload him and use the funds to push a move for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak or Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.
