Barcelona working to secure the continuity of Portuguese international on loan

The two Joaos on loan at Barcelona have both left the Catalan administration in a dilemma over their future.

Of the two, however, it is Cancelo who has made a stronger case to stay. Recent performances raised concerns within the fanbase, but it now appears that a decision has been reached as revealed by SPORT.

The lone condition

According to the outlet, both Xavi and Deco are in favour of Cancelo’s continuity next season. After all, he has been an undisputed starter for the team all season and has helped tremendously with his versatility.

There is, however, a catch given the team’s trying economic situation – the club will only pursue his continuity if a new loan agreement can be reached as it appears impossible to reach City’s demand of €30 million in the current economic scenario.

Jorge Mendes, Cancelo’s agent, is already aware of the club’s stance and is working hard to make sure that a new loan deal is possible.

The player’s prompt rejection of any third-party offers and his adamancy to stay in Catalonia could hold the key to a new agreement between Barcelona and Manchester City, the report adds.

The positional clause

Having played most of the season at left-back after Alejandro Balde’s injury, it is Xavi’s priority to send Cancelo back to his niche at right-back next season once Balde recovers.

After all, Barcelona need the Portuguese full-back’s experience at right-back and also hope to return Jules Kounde to central defence for next season.

A new right-back signing is impossible, but Julian Araujo can return from loan to provide backup to Cancelo in the position.

Moreover, Hector Fort is an able option from the academy who can play in the position next season.
