Kompany insists Burnley remain alive in relegation battle

Vincent Kompany is glad Burnley know where they stand after the rejection of Nottingham Forest’s appeal against their points deduction and insists the Clarets are alive in the Premier League relegation fight.

The confirmation that Forest’s penalty for breaching financial rules will stay at four points means Burnley must win at Tottenham on Saturday to stand any chance of survival, with a clash with Forest to come on the final day.

Their poor goal difference means they could however effectively be relegated even with a win should Forest pick up a point against Chelsea.

“As weird as it may sound, I didn’t pay any attention to (Forest’s appeal,” Kompany said.

“I’m desperate to stay in the league and pull off some sort of exceptional performance in the next two games, but I’ve kind of taught myself how to handle these situations, by genuinely not paying too much attention.

“The decision has been made so it’s play on now.”

Kompany’s side were outclassed 4-1 at home to Newcastle last Saturday but he insisted his squad remain in good spirits and ‘the shackles are off’ when they visit Tottenham.

He said: “After the game things can go through your mind and then you draw back on experiences in football, you think about the scenarios.

“If Nottingham Forest wasn’t our last game of the season then I think it would be totally unlikely, but they are our last game.

“Forest are a good team but have lost games, Luton have also lost games so there are no guarantees about who will win this weekend.

“We go to Spurs and they are a tough opponent. There’s a reason they are where they are in the league but it’s football and before you know it you are filled with confidence again.
