PSV decide against exercising €10 million buy option for injured Barcelona loanee

After sending Sergino Dest on loan to PSV Eindhoven last summer, FC Barcelona were happy with the full-back’s performances in the Netherlands.

After all, PSV have a €10 million buy option for the USMNT star at the end of the season, and everything suggested that the Eredivisie giants would trigger that clause in the summer.

However, a season-ending injury suffered last month has derailed those plans. Dest suffered a serious knee injury which required surgery, ruling the right-back out of action for nine months until 2025.

Despite that, PSV were said to be willing to sign Dest permanently, but for a lower sum than the €10 million in the loan agreement. But things have now changed.

PSV decide against buying Dest

Indeed, as reported by journalist Rik Elfrink, PSV have now decided not to exercise the purchase option for Sergino Dest after serious deliberation.

Having consulted all stakeholders involved, the Dutch giants have agreed not to trigger the €10 million buy clause for the versatile full-back at the end of the season barring any special developments.

As such, Dest appears set to return to Barcelona once his current loan stint at PSV ends, where he will continue his recuperation after injury.

However, the report adds that PSV would be open to returning for Dest in early 2025, providing his recovery has gone well.

After all, it must be noted that the former AFC Ajax man’s contract with Barcelona expires in the summer of next year.

As such, he could be available for free in the summer of 2025 or for a much lower fee in the winter.

For now, though, PSV have discarded the idea of exercising the buy option for the Barcelona defender.
