Manager confirms stance on the future of Barcelona loanee defender

One of the many players to go out on loan from Barcelona last summer was Sergino Dest, who joined PSV Eindhoven.

Despite a rough past couple of seasons, the American full-back managed to rejuvenate his career in the Netherlands, even convincing the Dutch outfit to activate his €10 million buy option.

However, those plans were abrupted when Dest suffered a serious long-term injury, which ruled him out for a whopping nine months.

In light of this, reports claimed that PSV would opt against their initial desire to sign Dest permanently.

And now information directly from the horse’s mouth confirms that Dest’s clause will indeed not be activated, although other options may be explored.

“We’re not triggering the buy option clause for Sergiño Dest but I’m still hoping we can find a way to keep him at the club,” PSV manager Peter Bosz stated via Fabrizio Romano.

The journalist claims that PSV plans to approach Barcelona to discuss a new solution for Dest’s future.

Dest’s contract with Barcelona expires in the summer of next year, which paves the way for PSV to either sign the player for a much cheaper price in the 2024 winter transfer window or simply sign him for free next year.

Alternatively, PSV could attempt to negotiate a discount on Dest’s €10 million buy and reduce his price tag.

This would allow Barcelona to get an instant cash injection, while Dest also remains at the Dutch club.

Considering Barça are in desperate need of offloading players so that they can return to the 1:1 rule in La Liga, they may be compelled to let Dest go for a lower fee this summer.
