Bearing a major turnaround in the final two matches of the Scottish Premiership season, the league title looks to be heading back to Celtic Park.
Cameron Carter-Vickers and Celtic all but sealed the league crown after defeating rivals Rangers 2-1 in Glasgow on Saturday afternoon. Brendan Rodgers’ squad used a first-half goal from Matt O’Riley and a John Lundstram own goal to move six points clear at the top of the table.
O’Riley’s goal in the 35th minute boosted the hosts in front before Lundstram’s unfortunate deflection three minutes later extended Celtic’s lead to 2-0.
Cyriel Dessers pulled one goal back for Rangers in the 40th minute, but the visitors’ comeback hopes took a major hit before halftime. Lundstram was sent off for a straight red card tackle on Alistair Johnston after VAR overturned the original call on the field.
Despite missing a chance to go up 3-1 before the hour mark, Celtic stood firm defensively to claim its second head-to-head win over Rangers this season.
Carter-Vickers won five duels, made six clearances, and one interception in his defensive performance. The American defender has made 29 combined appearances now this season for the reigning SPFL winners.
Celtic next travels to Kilmarnock on May 15 before closing the season at home against St. Mirren. A win or draw on Wednesday, or dropped points by Rangers will seal Celtic a 54th league crown in club history.
