Eddie Howe has been discussing Allan Saint-Maximin’s transfer to Al-Ahli last summer, revealing that we reluctantly sanctioned his sale to help us navigate through Financial Fair Play rules.
The popular Frenchman was moved on for around £21m, which was a difficult decision for the club but ultimately allowed us to spend more in the transfer market on Tino Livramento and Harvey Barnes.
As Howe explains (watch below) while speaking on The Overlap, he’s always been a huge fan of the winger, but acknowledged that it was also “his time to leave” and the best decision financially for the club.
“Financial Fair Play was hitting us, so we had to lose Allan Saint-Maximin at that moment.”

The departure has allowed Anthony Gordon to step in to a more senior role in which he has flourished this season with 10 goals and 10 assists so far in the Premier League, though he was harshly snubbed for Young Player of the Season.
Ultimately, looking back on the deal it does look like it was the best outcome for both parties and with Harvey Barnes also able to play on that left flank Newcastle look very strong in their attack when fully fit.
