Celtic win SPL title after showcase win at Kilmarnock

Brendan Rodgers and Celtic have pipped Rangers to the SPL title after beating Kilmarnock 5-0 away from home.

The Bhoys needed a point to guarantee their status as champions once again, retaining their 2023 crown.

It marks an 11th league title in 12 years for the Glaswegian side and they continue to be Scotland’s dominant force, despite their biggest rivals pushing them all the way this term.

Rangers are now six points behind their neighbours and will have to regroup for 2024-25 as they look to win their first title since 2021.

It was more of a formality that Celtic would be crowned and they comfortably swept Wednesday night’s opponents aside.

They were ahead after eight minutes thanks to Adam Idah, who turned home Matt O’Riley’s cross from deep.

Kilmarnock were asking for a foul after Robbie Deas appeared to be hit with an elbow and he was left with a bloody nose as the celebrations went on in the away end.

The party really started six minutes later when Celtic went 2-0 up.

Alistair Johnston picked out Daizen Maeda for a simple tap-in and the champions were in cruise control from that point onwards.

Their third was a lovely move involving the wingers.

Daizen Maeda provided a low ball across goal for James Forrest to bury first time, putting his side 3-0 up before half-time.

It did not take long into the second half before Rodgers’ men had a fourth.

O’Riley was at it again, this time taking the credit for himself as he fired one…
