De Zerbi left fuming with referee after Brighton lose to Chelsea

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi criticised the referee following his side’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League.

The Seagulls were not up to standards at the Amex Stadium on Wednesday night but did have some questionable calls go against them during the match.

Chelsea were awarded a penalty early on in the match, only for  Facundo Buonanotte’s challenge on Marc Cucurella to be deemed a good one after a VAR review.

In the dying minutes, captain Reece James kicked out at Joao Pedro after a challenge, which the referee initially missed.

It was not until he was told to look at the monitor did he brandish a red card for the England international.

Brighton did get off the hook when goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen committed a foul outside of his penalty area as the last man, but he was only shown a yellow card, to the protests of Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching staff.

It was a night to forget for Michael Salisbury but De Zerbi would not let matters rest until he had his say.

What he said

Speaking to Match of the Day, he said: “We lost against a top team with great players. We didn’t play well in the first 20 minutes but after that we played a good game.

“We have another game to reach the top 10 position.

“The referee, I didn’t like him today. I don’t think it was a good performance from him.

“We have suffered too many injuries this season. We know the level of players of Chelsea and what they have spent over the last two or three transfer markets.
