Gary Smith departs role as Nashville SC head coach

Gary Smith’s time as Nashville SC head coach has come to an end.

Smith departed his role with Nashville SC on Thursday, ending a seven-season tenure in Tennessee. He helped Nashville SC reach the playoffs in six-consecutive seasons, which included the club’s time in the USL Championship.

Assistant coach Steve Guppy has also been relieved of his duties while current Player Development Coach Rumba Munthali will step up as Interim Head Coach in Smith’s vacancy.

Smith registered a 61-57-43 record as Nashville SC’s head coach in MLS, leading the club to the Leagues Cup Final in 2023 and a CONCACAF Champions Cup berth in 2024. He managed in over 230 matches for the club across USL Championship and MLS play.

Prior to his role with Nashville SC, Smith served as head coach of the Colorado Rapids (Aug 2008. – Nov. 2011), Stevenage (Jan. 2012 – March 2013), and the Atlanta Silverbacks (Dec. 2014 – Jan. 2016).

Munthali, 45, served as a youth coach with Sporting KC from 2016-2023 before making the move to Nashville SC.

Nashville SC sits 10th in the Eastern Conference following Wednesday’s 2-0 home win over Toronto FC.
