Rodgers never doubted Celtic title triumph

Brendan Rodgers never had any doubts that his Celtic team would retain the SPL title.

The Bhoys strolled over the line in emphatic style on Wednesday night, beating Kilmarnock 5-0 away from home to confirm their status as champions.

Arch-rivals Rangers sit six points behind their Glaswegian neighbours and are unable to spoil the party on the final day.

It looked like Celtic may not even need to win their penultimate game when Rangers went 2-0 down to Dundee on Tuesday.

But they managed to come from behind and keep their faint hopes alive for an extra 24 hours.

Rodgers made sure his team were fired up heading to Kilmarnock and goals from Adam Idah, Daizen Maeda, James Forrest and Matt O’Riley capped off a perfect night.

The head coach said after the game: “Our performance level was immense. This was always going to be a really tough game.

“Everything I want in the team, technique, speed, power, mobility, creativity, it was all there.

“Overall, it was a brilliant team performance and a great way to clinch the title. We wanted to sprint over the line and we went over it really quickly.”

Champions again

The win marked Celtic’s 11th title in 12 years and their third in a row.

The Hoops have only lost three times all season in the league and will be looking to add more silverware to their collection when they take on Rangers in another Old Firm Scottish Cup final later this month.

But for now, Rodgers is happy to celebrate their title success and admits he always had faith his players would deliver.
