Just weeks after securing his future at the club, Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez now finds himself in limbo, with a decision on his future hinging on the club’s precarious financial situation.
Despite leading Barcelona to La Liga glory last season, Xavi’s position is under threat after a stagnant campaign. Club president Joan Laporta reportedly desires a change in management, but his hands are tied by the club’s dire financial straits.
Laporta delaying a call on Xavi
All of this means Xavi Hernandez will have to agonisingly wait for Joan Laporta to make a definite call on his future, even though the coach is aware he is not welcomed by the President, reports Diario AS.
Laporta, meanwhile, has postponed a crucial meeting with Xavi until after the Women’s Champions League final, citing the need to avoid distractions.

The crux of the issue lies in a failed investment deal with German firm Libero. Barcelona had budgeted for a significant windfall from the sale of a 49% stake in Barça Studios. However, the deal collapsed, leaving a gaping hole in the club’s finances.
If the club do not secure alternative funding by June 30, they will be forced to re-evaluate their financial statements.
Laporta’s desire to dismiss Xavi is indeed linked to the club’s financial health. Without securing additional funds, Barcelona cannot afford to pay severance for Xavi’s dismissal.
Lack of alternatives in the market
The report further speculates that Barcelona might ultimately follow the Ronald Koeman method, where they might ask Xavi to stay until they find a desirable replacement.
In addition to financial constraints, Barcelona also have a lack of options available in the market.
The proposed appointment of Barça Athletic coach Rafa Marquez as Xavi’s replacement is an immediate solution, but the Mexican lacks unanimity within the board.
