‘Never say never’ to West Ham return

‘Never say never’ to West Ham return

David Moyes believes he has put West Ham back on the map and said ‘never say never’ to a third stint at the club.

The 61-year-old spent six months in charge of the Hammers, guiding them to Premier League safety in 2017/18 and then returned 18 months later, succeeding Manuel Pellegrini.

After again avoiding the drop in 2019/20, Moyes guided West Ham to a top-six finish, Europa League semi-finals, another top-seven finish and then the 2023 Europa Conference League title.

Moyes told BBC Sport it had been ‘a little bit emotional in the dressing room’ after their final day defeat to Man City, but added: “They brought me back once before so never say never.”

“Overall I think my job was to try and avoid relegation at West Ham or do better, and I think undoubtedly we’ve done better,” he added.

“We weren’t happy about (finishing) 14th last year but before that we’ve had a sixth and a seventh. If anyone had given me that when I’d first come in I’d have snapped their hand off.”

The victory over Fiorentina will live long in Hammers fans memories and Moyes – who will work as a TV pundit at the Euros this summer – added: “Part of a manager’s job is to try and make progress and get them back on the map – I think West Ham are a bit more back on the map, certainly with a European win as well.”

As for what’s next, Moyes added: “I’m doing some work on the Euros then I’m going to take a good break, sit back and see what I want to do next.”

Former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui is widely expected to be revealed as Moyes’ successor at the London Stadium this week.
