Mauricio Pochettino could be Southgate’s replacement

Mauricio Pochettino could be Southgate’s replacement

No sooner had the 2023/24 Premier League season finished than Chelsea dispensed with the services of Mauricio Pochettino by mutual consent.

The Argentinian had endured a topsy-turvy season at Stamford Bridge with more lows than highs, however, a late flurry of wins ensured that Chelsea will play in Europe next season.

Given how many players owner Todd Boehly had ordered to be sold a year ago, coupled with the sheer amount of new signings that came in, it was always going to be a big ask for Pochettino to guide the squad to success.

Pochettino could take over from Southgate

Despite the issues he faced, the manager still helped to guide his side to the Carabao Cup Final and an FA Cup semi-final.

That was still not enough for owner, Todd Boehly, but the disappointment Pochettino would surely be feeling could soon be swept away.

Mauricio Pochettino could take over from Gareth Southgate.

That’s because, as The Telegraph (subscription required) note, the Argentinian could be a contender for the England job if Gareth Southgate steps aside after the European Championship.

The outlet suggest that, in fact, Pochettino has had a long-standing interest in the England manager’s job and it’s believed he will seriously consider it if it were to be offered later in the summer.

As a manager that’s known to enjoy working with young players, he could be the perfect replacement for Southgate.

Those Chelsea players already in the England set-up – Palmer, James and Chilwell – are almost certain to sing his praises to their fellow Three Lions, and the hierarchy.

There’s a lot of variables in place before even the thought of Pochettino getting close to being given a chance for the job will happen of course, however, the Football Association could do worse.
