It’s gone from bad to worse for Dan Ashworth, as another damning exclusive has emerged from The Mail’s Craig Hope on the events that preceded his proposed move to Man Utd.
He revealed on on Tuesday that our former sporting director sent an email in early February to incoming Man Utd executive Omar Berrada making it clear he planned to accept an offer from Old Trafford. However, this was BEFORE Newcastle were made aware of Man Utd’s interest – sparking a tapping-up probe – and has come to light after Ashworth accidentally sent a blind copy to his Newcastle email address.
More evidence has now emerged and it’s another bad look for the 53-year-old, as Hope reveals that Ashworth tried to cover his tracks by deleting the evidence after he accidentally sent an email to his Newcastle account revealing secret talks with Man Utd.
What’s worse, he later claimed that comments made by Eddie Howe ‘made his position untenable’ after the Toon boss was quizzed about his possible exit in a press conference. Sadly for Ashworth, that won’t wash as his secret (and deleted) emails show he’d already accepted Man Utd’s ‘private’ offer! Two days on from Howe’s comments – which flagged up concerns that he still had access to the clubs transfer plans – it’s thought Ashworth finally asked to leave. Again, however, his mind was already made up at that stage, yet Newcastle were none the wiser.
Hope also reports that at the time of deleting the emails showing those secret talks, the Red Devils had not approached Newcastle and Ashworth had also failed to inform his North-East employers of the discussions he’d been having with Man Utd. The tapping up is clear and Ashworth’s part in it all is also highly deceitful.
The Mail believe this could lead to a Premier League probe if a complaint is made by Newcastle United, with this a hugely embarrassing turn of events that could tarnish Ashworth’s reputation; especially given his track record of moving…
