Newcastle are pushing to tie up a deal for Georgian goalkeeper Mamardashvili before EURO 2024, according to reports in Spain this afternoon.
As revealed by Gols Media – a Basque-based news outlet that covers Valencia – talks have been ‘ progressing’ between Newcastle United and Valencia, with the La Liga side currently for a fee in the region of €40m (£34m).
They report that Newcastle do not want discussions to drag out and hope to conclude the signing quickly, knowing an impressive European Champions with Georgia could attract other suitors and see his price tag rise.
Gols Media reveal that 10% of any transfer fee will go to Mamardashvili’s former club Dinamo Tbilisi, with Valencia preparing for his sale after signing Rayo Vallecano No 1 Stole Dimitrievski earlier this week.
In a recent interview, the 23-year-old hinted that an early move could be on the cards, saying: “My future will become clear very soon. Now I have an important tournament with Georgia. Valencia is my home and it has given me a career as a footballer.”
Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale was linked with a potential move to St James’ Park last week, with Eddie Howe eager to recruit a younger goalkeeper able to compete with Nick Pope over the 2024/25 season.
Mamardashvili’s Georgia will be in Group F for this summer’s Euros, which kick-off on June 14th, taking on Portugal, Turkey and Czechia for a place in the knockout stages.
