Earlier this month, The Telegraph and Sky Sports revealed that Newcastle’s lengthy interview process for the vacant sporting director role had been narrowed down to Dougie Freedman and Johannes Spors; the global sporting director of 777 Partners.
At the time, Luke Edwards revealed that Freedman was the frontrunner to replace Dan Ashworth, as his Premier League experience gave him the edge. However, it’s emerged today that the Crystal Palace chief has opted to stay at Selhurst Park after signing a new deal – which includes a significant pay rise – with the Eagles.
With Freedman not out of the picture, it would be no surprise if Spors comes back into the equation, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein also revealing that the German made our final two-man shortlist.
While he does lack Premier League experience, Spors has an impressive recruitment record in Europe and has previously worked as RB Leipzig’s head of recruitment before leaving for 777; who are in the process of a takeover at Everton and also own Genoa, Standard Liege, Hertha Berlin and Vasco da Gama.
The Athletic’s Chris Waugh reports that the 41-year-old is ‘open’ to a role on Tyneside and has been discussed by Newcastle chiefs in recent days, suggesting he was always in the frame despite Freedman being the frontrunner.
