As reported by Lee Ryder at The Chronicle, Newcastle sent a scout to watch Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley last weekend following his best season yet with the Scottish champions.
Although the squad have been away in Australia this past week playing a couple of post-season friendlies, it’s believed the scouting department – led by Steve Nickson and Andy Howe – has been working hard ahead of a big summer off the pitch.
The Chronicle report that a Newcastle representative was in attendance as Celtic beat St Mirren 3-2 on Saturday afternoon, where the 23-year-old scored their first before lifting the league trophy at the end of the game.
O’Riley has been one of Celtic’s star players this season, recording 19 goals and 18 assists in 48 appearances in all competitions, and the Denmark international looks to be in high demand with a number of Premier League sides watching him closely.
Newcastle could use more of a goal threat from the midfield, although we do have a number of options in that department when everyone is fit, with Joelinton signing a new deal, Sandro Tonali to return and youngsters Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley breaking into Howe’s first-team plans last season.
