In a summer that was dominated by the headline purchases of players like Ilkay Gundogan, and Inigo Martinez, as well as the loan signing of Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo, the acquisition of Oriol Romeu was an outlier of sorts.
The former La Masia product, now a veteran, rejoined Barcelona last summer for a fee of €3.4 million. He was brought in to act as a stopgap between Sergio Busquets and a new defensive midfielder who Barcelona could not sign due to economic constraints.
However, as we approach the end of the season, Romeu has been far from impressive. He has struggled to even establish himself as a first-team regular and is now on the verge of leaving Camp Nou.
Oriol Romeu to return to Girona
The news of Romeu’s departure was a foregone conclusion at Barcelona. But a recent report from Mundo Deportivo has shed more light on the veteran’s future.

As per the report, Romeu is all set to rejoin his former club Girona this summer. Despite his exit last summer, Romeu remains a respected figure at Girona.
The Catalan club rate him highly due to the quality and experience he brings to the table. Due to Girona’s desire to bring back the midfielder, Barcelona are likely to fetch good value for the player.
In fact, the report suggests that Barcelona will be able to fetch the same valuation they paid for Romeu’s services about a year ago.
As mentioned earlier, the Spaniard had joined the club for a fee of €3 million. Barça are expected to ask for a similar valuation for the veteran in the coming summer.
Romeu, for his part, is open to returning to his former stomping ground and once again working under the leadership of Michel.
