Former Newcastle trio called up to international squad ahead of Euro 2024

An unlikely trio of former Newcastle players who all played under Rafa Benitez at some point have now been included in Spain’s provisional squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament this summer.

Ayoze Perez, Joselu and Mikel Merino were all selected by head coach Luis de la Fuente and will be hoping they can make the cut for the final squad after impressive campaigns in La Liga.

Since his £30m move to Leicester, Perez has returned to Spain in the last couple of years where he has been playing consistently for Real Betis scoring nine goals in 30 games this season.

Joselu also left the club that same summer and after a couple of spells at Alaves and Espanyol has found himself as a backup striker at Real Madrid where he netted twice in the Champions League semi final earlier this month.

Finally, Merino always looked to have a lot of potential during his short stay on Tyneside and it seems he’s now unlocked it after a very impressive year at Real Sociedad where he’s playing regular European football.
