According to Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth, Newcastle have held ‘positive’ talks with sporting director Johannes Spors to potentially replace Dan Ashworth after being rejected by Crystal Palace’s Dougie Freedman.
Newcastle had made Freedman their number one target and seemed confident that they would be able to pry him away from South London, but the 50-year-old has opted to sign a new deal with the Eagles.
Now, it seems the club are returning to Spors, who was mentioned earlier in the month as another potential option to replace Ashworth.
Spors is currently involved with 777 Partners who are still looking to take over Everton, and it’s believed that conversations are heading in the right direction with the German, who has experience at RB Leipzig, Hamburger SV and Vitesse.
With Newcastle pushing to have a very productive summer in signing a handful of first-team players who can immediately improve the squad it is imperative that they get this appointment correct for the long-term success of the club.
Talks ongoing between Newcastle United and Johannes Spors over the vacant Sporting Director role.
One source has described the talks as positive. #NUFC
