In 2019, Barcelona pulled one of the greatest transfer heists in the club’s recent memory, when the club roped in a certain Pedri for a figure of just €5 million.
Pedri joined Barcelona from Las Palmas, his boyhood club. Since then, he has gone on to establish himself as one of the finest midfielders in La Liga.
The facts behind the Pedri deal
Pedri’s unprecedented success at Barcelona has made the €5 million appear to be an absolute bargain. However, as revealed by a report from Diario AS, the face value of Pedri’s transfer is deceptively low.
The report reveals certain details of Barcelona’s deal with Las Palmas, which suggests that the Catalan club shelled out €18 million as variables.
This additional figure primarily came in the form of certain clauses involved in Pedri’s deal. The variables were primarily tied to Pedri’s playing time and national team appearances.

Fortunately for Barcelona, all of these added variable clauses, barring one, have been met, which brings Pedri’s total transfer cost to €23 million.
The remaining clause
The only remaining clause that Barcelona are yet to pay is the player’s sell-on clause. As part of Pedri’s deal to Barcelona, Las Palmas had secured a 15% sell-on clause, meaning the club are entitled to 15% of Pedri’s transfer value, provided Barcelona sell the player.
However, as things stand, Pedri’s departure from Camp Nou is an unthinkable idea, even after the appointment of Hansi Flick.
Despite the player’s recent struggles with injuries, Pedri will remain one of Barcelona’s vital cogs in midfield. His creativity and ability to provide attacking flair could prove to be crucial in Flick’s direct style of play.
While the additional €18 million in bonuses is significant, it pales in comparison to Pedri’s value on the pitch and his potential to become a Barcelona legend for years to come.
