Newcastle United have today announced that they have extended the contract of goalkeeper Mark Gillespie until the end of the 2023/24 season.
Gillespie has made just three appearances for Newcastle since joining in 2020, all coming in the Carabao Cup in his first season, though that’s simply the nature of being a third choice keeper.
With Martin Dubravka expected to leave this summer and the club already confirming the departure of Loris Karius, Newcastle were keen to ensure they weren’t left with just Nick Pope as their only shot-stopper.
Very recently Eddie Howe gave Gillespie huge praise after his penalty heroics in the victory over Tottenham in Australia, touching on how important he has been off the pitch and in training for all of the players.
Now, the boss admitted that he is ‘delighted’ to see him stay for another year while Gillespie claimed that he was ‘already looking forward’ to starting pre-season and taking on a new campaign.
Here’s what Howe said:
“Mark’s attitude to his work and his consistency are of the highest order.
“He continues to set an example in how he trains, plays and supports his teammates, and that’s a hugely important component in any squad. I’m delighted to have him with us.”
Here’s what Gillespie said:
“I’m delighted to be extending my contract into next season. This is the club I grew up supporting and it’s a hugely exciting time to be a part of it.
“We have a brilliant group in the dressing room and at the training ground, and it’s a great environment to work in. I’m already looking forward to pre-season and to getting back onto the grass.”
