Newcastle eyeing Premier League veteran to replace Loris Karius – Report

According to reports in London, Newcastle are considering a summer move for Asmir Begovic following Loris Karius’ departure.

West London Sport claim Newcastle, West Ham and a number of clubs in Saudi Arabia have shown an interest in the 36-year-old stopper, who will see his deal at QPR expire this summer if a new contract isn’t agreed.

The Bosnian captained the Hoops over the 2023/24 season, keeping 13 clean sheets along the way, and is someone Eddie Howe knows well from their time together at Bournemouth.

Begovic joined the Cherries from Chelsea in 2017 and was hailed by Howe for his Premier League know-how and leadership, saying: “Asmir is an outstanding goalkeeper who has proved himself capable of performing at the highest level over a number of years. He is a leader as well and exactly the kind of character you want in the team.”

He has bags of Premier League experience, playing 256 times in the English top flight following spells with Stoke, Bournemouth, Chelsea and Everton.

It remains to be seen if we’ll make a move – he could yet sign a new deal at Loftus Road – but this link could make sense if we’re looking for a cut-price replacement for Loris Karius, should Howe want four goalkeepers at the club once again next season.
