Aris Thessaloniki and its president Theodoros Karypidis fined over threatening safety of Stephanie Frappart

June 4 – Greece’s Aris Thessaloniki have been fined a total of €60,000 for their threatening behaviour towards French referee Stephanie Frappart at the end of the Greek Cup final against Panathinaikos late last month.

Players, coaches and even Aris president Theodoros Karypidis surrounded the referee at full-time, angry at her refereeing of the game.

Frappart showed a total of 11 yellow cards, including three red cards. Two Aris players were sent off. In the end, Panathinaikos won the final with a goal in the 97th minute, causing tempers to boil over.

After the final whistle, Frappart had to be escorted to safety by a police cordon as Aris’ players, coaches and the club’s president furiously attempted to confront Frappart.

The game was already being played behind closed doors due to concerns over fan violence.

]Karypidis was fined €20,000 personally with the club and Russian player Magomed-Shapi Suleymanov receiving similar fines. Suleymanov was also given a five-match ban.

“An administrative fine of twenty thousand euros (€20,000) was imposed on PAE ARIS as well as on its president (in his own right as a natural person) and one of its football players, for an incident of violence, related to sports and which took place inside the playing field of the PANTTHESSALIC STADIUM, immediately after the end of the Final match PANATHINAIKOS – ARIS for the Greek Cup on 25/05/2024,” said a Greek federation statement.
