Hansi Flick’s appointment as the new coach of Barcelona is set to bring significant tactical changes to the team.
In that context, a recent report from SPORT indicates that the German manager plans to utilise young midfielder Pedri in a way similar to how he developed Jamal Musiala at Bayern Munich.
It is to be noted that Flick was the coach who gave Musiala his big break when he was just 16 years old. Flick saw in Musiala a talented playmaker who could support the forwards, with excellent vision and the ability to drive the team’s offensive play.
Flick sees Musiala in Pedri
The aforementioned outlet mentions that Flick sees similar qualities in Pedri. The German coach views the Barcelona midfielder as a crucial part of his project at Barcelona and based on Flick’s preferred system, Pedri could play as a playmaker.
Flick typically uses a 4-2-3-1 formation. In this setup, Pedri would play just behind the striker, who in Barcelona’s case, is Robert Lewandowski.

Reflecting on the German national team, Ilkay Gundogan and Joshua Kimmich often played as the double pivot with Musiala in the playmaker role. At Bayern, it was Thiago Alcantara and Kimmich managing the midfield, with Thomas Muller linking up with the forwards.
Flick’s midfield at Barcelona
Given these examples, it is likely that Gundogan will play a significant role in midfield, with Pedri having more freedom to attack.
Meanwhile, one of Flick’s major challenges will be managing the playing time for so many midfielders, including Pedri, Fermín Lopez, Gundogan, Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, and possibly Kimmich, if he joins Barcelona.
If Kimmich does sign with Barcelona, Flick won’t have a traditional positional midfielder in the squad.
As far as Pedri is concerned, one can expect the midfielder to be heavily involved in the offense considering that Musiala does the same at Bayern.
