According to The Athletic, Newcastle United are planning to spend a ‘significant’ chunk of their summer budget on a right winger and have been discussing targets in recent recruitment talks.
As revealed by Chris Waugh, it’s believed four names have featured in discussions; Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise, West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams and Leeds United’s Crysencio Summerville.
There will be other targets under consideration, I’m sure, but it’s clear the club are planning to bring in an upgrade on Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy after spending the last two transfer windows upgrading our left side following an £80m spend on Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes.
Olise and Bowen are both Premier League proven and would add real quality to the side. The Palace star is thought to have a release clause below £60m, but is a wanted man after interest from most of the ‘big six.’
Bowen hit 20 goals for the Hammers last season and was targeted during his time at Hull City. However, he wouldn’t come cheap and it remains to be seen how much we’d spend on a player who turns 28 later this year.
Summerville is a slightly surprising link, as he’s predominantly played on the left for Leeds, where he often cuts in on his right. He bagged 21 goals an 10 assists last season and is expected to leave Elland Road after they failed to seal promotion back to the Premier League.
Then there’s Williams, who has enjoyed his best season yet for Athletic Bilbao and has been watched by Toon scouts over the past two seasons. The 21-year-old will feature for Spain at Euro 2024 after eight goals an 17 assists over the 2023/24 season.
As for strikers, The Athletic also report that Benjamin Sesko has been previously approached by Newcastle, but the RB Leipzig star is expected to sign elsewhere.
