According to The Athletic, Newcastle United’s summer budget is likely to be ‘somewhere between £70m-£100m’ – although player sales could give Eddie Howe more money to spend.
The Toon boss has previously suggested that conventional transfer budgets are a thing of the past now FFP and PSR have complicated matters and muddied the waters when it comes to available funds.
However, The Athletic feel ‘a level of investment similar to each of the past two summers’ is probable, with the arrival of a right-winger the top priority along with a goalkeeper, two centre-backs and a striker.
Interestingly, the same piece mentions what Eddie Howe is looking for in his summer signings, stating the 46-year-old ‘craves’ positional and tactical versatility along with athletes able to add speed, strength and running power to his squad.
It’s believed that ‘experience is desirable’, with a host ageing players potentially leaving after exits for Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie. Those at risk including Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron – both in their 30s – while there’s been some questions around Kieran Trippier’s future now the 33-year-old is out of contract next summer.
The Athletic also report that we’re keeping a close eye on relegated talent available at Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United. The pool of players may not be as strong as it was last summer, but Newcastle have a history of this after recent moves for Nick Pope, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento.
