Earlier today, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente confirmed the 26-man squad list for the UEFA Euro 2024, cutting three players from the provisional squad he had announced previously.
One of the three players to be axed from the initial preliminary list was Barcelona youngster Pau Cubarsi, while his club teammates Fermin Lopez, Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal, and Pedri were retained in the final squad.
Spain players surprised
Following the announcement of the squad list, Spain players were ‘surprised’ by the exclusion of Pau Cubarsi for the UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany, reports journalist Toni Juanmarti.
Within the group, it was almost taken for granted that the 17-year-old centre-back would be included on the final list for the tournament in Germany by De la Fuente.
However, the La Roja manager has decided against it, which some of the players in the squad are unable to ‘understand’ as per the report.

After all, Cubarsi enjoyed a fine breakthrough season with Barça, becoming a mainstay in the team on the back of some exceptional displays after making his debut in January.
Possible reasons for Cubarsi’s explosion
Even though an official explanation from Luis de la Fuente has not arrived, Toni Juanmarti reports that the Spain manager’s entourage justifies Cubarsi’s omission by claiming that they are being prudent about the 17-year-old’s workload.
The example of another Barcelona star, Pedri, is cited with the midfielder going through injury after injury following an arduous campaign in 2021 when he played both the Euros and the Olympics for Spain after a full season with the club.
Cubarsi’s exclusion from the Euros all but guarantees his place in the Spain squad for the Olympic Games in Paris. The defender, as a result, will miss the pre-season tour of the USA and possibly the start of the new campaign.
