In line with the tradition of including Barcelona players in the Spanish national team, Luis De la Fuente selected four Barça players for the Euros: Fermin Lopez, Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal, and Pedri.
However, one of the major talking points following the publication of Spain’s squad list was Pau Cubarsi’s exclusion.
The young centre-back had an outstanding debut season with the Catalan giants and looked mightily impressive in Spain’s most recent encounter against Andorra, even notching an assist for the opener.
While Cubarsi will miss out on the opportunity to represent his national team in one of the biggest international tournaments, his inclusion in the Olympics later this summer is not a distant possibility.
Cubarsi could play the Olympics
Indeed, the Spanish U-21 and Olympics team coach, Santi Denia, acknowledged that the 17-year-old gem could be under his wing in the Olympics.
“Of course, Cubarsi has many options. He is a player we like a lot. It is a dream for any player to be in the Olympic Games,” he stated via SPORT.

The Paris 2024 Olympics will commence on July 26 this year, which means Cubarsi’s potential involvement with Spain will see him miss out on most of the pre-season.
Hansi Flick, keen to have the majority of his personnel available for a thorough evaluation of the squad ahead of the season, would likely regret the absence of Cubarsi.
Santi Denia praises Spain’s level
“In Spanish football, there is a lot of talent, because the facilities have also been greatly improved,” Santi Denia added.
The coach also shed light on the high quality of the Spanish coaching staff and their preparation for games.
“The level of the Spanish coach is the best in the world in training. We are references throughout the world,” he said.
“I am privileged to be able to choose players. We also don’t have the same time to prepare for the game,” Denia concluded.
