Newcastle sanction summer exit with £15m deal close – Celtic and Saudi clubs keen – Report

According to the Daily Record, Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is wanted by Celtic now his future on Tyneside is in serious doubt.

The Scottish paper reports that Newcastle are ‘closing in’ on a £15m move for James Trafford and have sanctioned a summer move away for the Slovakian, who Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers hopes to sign following Joe Hart’s retirement.

It’s believed Celtic face competition from at least two Saudi sides, with a host of unnamed European clubs also eyeing the experienced goalkeeper.

Dubravka has been a solid servant for Newcastle, arriving initially on loan in 2018 from Slavia Prague before making that move permanent and playing a key role in some tough relegation battles.

He was called upon this season due to Nick Pope’s injury at the start of December and went on to make 23 Premier League appearances. However, with Pope fit again and Trafford tipped to sign, it seems the 35-year-old will be allowed to leave this summer, which makes sense for all parties now he’s entering the final 12 months of his deal.

Celtic are in need of a new number one and could offer Dubravka Champions League footballer next season, allowing him to play regularly at a decent level if he opts for Scotland over Saudi Arabia or a return to the continent.
