The Croatians were drawn into Group B, forming a ‘Group of Death’ alongside three-time European champions Spain, current holders Italy and the very unlucky Albania. It was Luka Modric who ran the show during the Croats’ historic 2018 World Cup push, picking up the Golden Ball and subsequent Ballon d’Or in the process. Fuelled by the reality that this may be his last major international tournament, the 38-year-old has the opportunity to end his Croatia career on a high note with one of the few trophies he’s yet to win.
The midfielder has been the cog to Dalic’s system across the past three major tournaments, but with age not on his side and his game time for Real Madrid finally reducing, it will be interesting to see how the veteran’s approach changes.
