According to reports in Brazil, Newcastle United talent Matheos Ferreira has just signed his first professional contract on Tyneside after impressing in our Academy.
The 15-year-old playmaker – who has grown up in Berwick but is the son of Brazilian parents – has been impressing in Newcastle’s U18 side over the 2023/24 season and has previously been called up to England’s U15 squad.
His father played competitively in Spain before moving to England and now Matheos has hopes of breaking into Eddie Howe’s first-team plans in the future, with the teenager landing his first pro deal according to Globo Esporte.
Speaking to the popular Brazilian outlet, Ferreira has been discussing his dream of being a footballer, his dedication and the extra expectation as a Brazilian attacker. “My mum said: ‘You want to be a footballer, you’ll have to dedicate yourself’. I was a bit scared to talk to my father, but he said yes,” he said.
“You have to be patient, because the time will come. It’s how much you want it, how much you’re willing to wait and sacrifice. The opportunity will come. You just have to keep training, wait for the right moment and seize the opportunity when it arrives.”
“I don’t think it (the expectation as a Brazilian) a problem. I think they even feel privileged to have a Brazilian in their team!”
With recent recruits Trevan Sanusi and Leo Shahar – two fellow England youth internationals – also signing pro deals recently, it’s clear Newcastle are committed to their ever-improving Academy and could have some fresh faces breaking into the first-team picture before too long.
Here’s a few clips of Matheos in action – he looks a real talent!
