Spain imperious as France go second in rankings ahead of 2024 Paris Olympics

June 14 – Spain have consolidated their position as the world’s top ranked women’s team, in the latest iteration of the FIFA/Cola-Cola Women’s World Ranking, assuming the kind of imperious dominance that was previously seen by the US.

In contrast the US women, World Champions in 2019, have slipped further down the ranking to 5th spot, trading places with Germany. Five of the top six nations are European.

France, with an away win and a home loss to England in Euro 2025 qualifying this month, overtake the 2023 World Cup finalists for second place in the rankings, their highest ever.

The AFC has two nations in the top 10 (and five in the top 20) with Japan ranked 7th and North Korea, now fully returned to prominence in the women’s game, ranked 10th (up one place).

The Netherlands dropped three place and out of the top 10 to 11th the first time they have been outside the top 10 in seven years.

Brazil, hosts of the next Women’s World Cup in 2027, moved up a place to 9th, the highest ranked of Conmebol’s teams.

FIFA point to Montenegro (85th, up 4) and El Salvador (90th, up 7) as “eye-catching advances within the top 100, while Belarus (55th, up 2) register the biggest points gain (up 31.91 points).”

North Macedonia made the biggest gain in terms of ranking positions (123rd, up 12), following wins over Latvia and Moldova.

Other than the Macedonians, five other national teams hit their highest-ever points totals: Spain, Zambia, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, and Congo DR.

There are 193 nations in the current ranking.
